Five things all iPhone and Android developers need to know

Tools

Both Apple's iPhone and Google's Android have revolutionized the business of mobile application development. Not only is the iPhone the first mobile device to illustrate to consumers the true technological promise of the mobile platform, but its accompanying virtual storefront the App Store reshaped the distribution and sale of mobile software, resulting in an unprecedented revenue windfall for the developer community. The rival Android open software platform (first brought to market via T-Mobile USA's HTC-produced G1) is no less a game-changer, promising a brave new world of developmental freedom and flexibility while laying waste to the walled garden mindset long at the core of operator dominance.

But the similarities between iPhone and Android end beyond their massive impact--as developers can tell you, creating applications for one platform is a radically different proposition from writing code for the other.

Here's a breakdown:

Anyway, mobile phone will go open architecture, and will converge home phone, office phone and mobile phone into ONE common phone.

Converged phones...may be. But not for a while. Let's keep our feet on the ground and enjoy the brilliant things Apple and Android are bringing to the party. Or you can sit on the sidelines and wait until the converged phone actually arrives...

but not for a while? Did you miss the news that T-Mobile offers a Home Zone service nation wide? or that Cox is building out it's own 3G network? or that nearly every major teleco has reorg'd into functional organizations where wireless and fixed line are being planned by a single team under a convergence strategy? or that AT&T just bought Wayport? or that Femtocell and UMA starups are continuing to get funded in a tough financial market?

Maybe it will be a little while before a perfect converged device ships that covers all the use cases but we are already seeing many real convergence enabled commercial products in market.

No, this does not mean 'convergence' this actually ads complexity to the sytem. There will be more OS's in the future, not less, and multiply each OS by the tweaks of the network they are running on and you have a totall mess. Only 2 things will fix the problem: 1) monopoly or oligarchy by device or OS, or 2) government mandate of a standard. Carriers and OEMs will never, ever agree on a standard.

Yawn!

Good Afternoon All! I am currently working with GSMA to promote a new awards event being held in June in Barcelona. I am looking for developer blogs to inform people about this event. The event is from June 16-19th and will include Networking sessions to give developers the chance to interact with mobile developing venture capitalists, key industry decision makers, vendors and many more. There will also be awards given to developers who create apps. They will present their app to a panel of judges as well as the entire 70,000+ attendees. Talk about exposure, this is the place to be! There will also be conferences and discussions as well. Entries for the awards portion of the conference start feb 25th. please email me or respond to this posting with other sites to post this on or if you yourself need more information. Look at the events page this week to get more information on this event!
