The CDMA Development Group trade association announced the conclusion of its Open Market Handset proof of concept trials. According to the CDG, Open Market Handsets enable both operator-specific configuration information and subscriber-specific provisioning information to be transported from the device's non-volatile memory into a Removable User Identity Module or smartcard, in effect creating a generic handset that may be sold and used across multiple carrier networks. Operators employing an OMH-capable R-UIM to provision their data services can now support the same generic hardware and software design across handsets, which the CDG says translates to reduced development costs, greater economies of scale, expanded brand development and new international sales opportunities for OEMs.
