Motorola steps up search for mobile devices chief

Tools

Motorola is stepping up its search for a new head for its troubled mobile device unit even as it continues to mull strategic options for the division. Speaking at a technology conference in Dana Point, Calif. on Monday, Motorola CEO Greg Brown said he is personally spearheading the search, and looking to recruit candidates with experience in both consumer electronics and product strategy. "We need a leader that has more of a strategic and product orientation, with a level of familiarity around consumer electronics," Brown said, adding that candidates with experience in handsets or personal computers would receive serious consideration. Brown also said Motorola is seeking new software and marketing talent. Brown was realistic in his assessment of the company's immediate future, admitting revenues and market share are expected to fall in the first quarter at a pace far greater than typical seasonal declines: "I expect [competition] to be very rugged, particularly for the remainder of 2008 and into 2009," he said.
