Nokia reaffirms commitment to Symbian

Nokia is publicly refuting reports it will drop the Symbian operating system from its N-series device line in favor of the Maemo OS. According to a report published by The Really Mobile Project, Maemo marketing team member Tanja Sauvola told attendees at Nokia's N900 meetup in London that the handset giant plans to gradually phase out Symbian, with Maemo-based devices making up all of its flagship phone range by 2012. Not true, Nokia maintains.

"While it is our policy not to disclose details of our product roadmap, we'd like to explicitly communicate that we remain firmly committed to Symbian as our smartphone platform of choice," reads Nokia's official statement, calling any speculation on its 2012 product and OS plans "completely premature. As we have stated earlier, Nokia has multiple platforms to serve different purposes and address different markets. Symbian is more successful than ever in bringing smartphones to the masses. Maemo is our software of choice for devices based on technology that you'd typically find inside a desktop computer. It delivers a different user experience and enables us to widen the market we can address."
