Palm gets small with Centro smartphone

Palm and Sprint introduced the Centro smart device, the first new Treo design issued in the U.S. market in several years and the smallest Palm smartphone to date. Featuring  voice, text, IM, e-mail, web, contact and calendar capabilities as well as a full-color touch screen and full keyboard, the Centro weighs in at 4.3 by 2.1 by 0.75 inches and 4.2 ounces, with a 2.2-inch, 320-by-320 color screen. The Centro runs on Palm's four-year-old Garnet OS, and though it's optimized for Sprint's EV-DO Rev 0 network, the operator says it will not be upgradeable to the faster Rev A platform. Other highlights: The Blazer 4.5 Web browser, Palm's VersaMail e-mail application, Sprint's own e-mail application for access to Gmail, AOL, and Yahoo! accounts, a blogging app and access to Sprint's television and music services. The Palm Centro will arrive at retail in mid-October with a $99.99 price tag.
