Palm OS II smartphones pushed to first half of 2009

Tools

While maintaining that its next-generation operating system will still reach completion by the end of 2008, Palm subtly changed the expected shipping date for handsets based on the Linux-based OS to the first half of 2009. During an analyst call last week, Palm reiterated that the OS--known as both "Palm OS II" and "Nova"--remains on track to make its debut by year's end, echoing promises delivered in May by CFO Andrew Brown. But while Palm smartphones were once expected to follow by early next year, the firm now estimates devices will ship sometime during the first six months of 2009. In the interim, Palm will continue offering devices running on the current incarnation of the Palm OS as well as Windows Mobile-based products.
