Mobile GPS applications publisher uLocate Communications announced its WHERE Developer Contest, which the company claims is the first contest of its kind requiring no prior mobile development experience. Spearheaded by the WHERE Developer Program, the contest requires entrants to build original applications on any programming environment--WHERE will automatically port the applications to J2ME and BREW GPS-capable mobile handsets. Contestants will vie for thousands of dollars in cash prizes as well as audiences with venture capital firms Venrock, Kodiak Venture Partners, and GrandBanks Capital. An industry panel comprising representatives from Frost & Sullivan, IDC, the Yankee Group, O'Reilly Radar, and ProgrammableWeb will determine the finalists.

The WHERE Developer Contest runs until October 15, 2007. "The WHERE Developer Program was created to eliminate the technical challenges associated with developing and publishing a mobile GPS application," said uLocate CEO Walt Doyle in a prepared statement. "With the WHERE Developer Contest, we are proud to offer a chance for creative content developers to increase their visibility and enter the mobile ecosystem."
