Urban Airship launches In-App Purchase for Android
Mobile services platform provider Urban Airship introduced its In-App Purchase for Android solution, enabling developers to offer supplementary content available for sale via one-click billing option. Developed in conjunction with Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), which introduced in-app billing functionality across its Android Market storefront late last month, In-App Purchase enables delivery of dynamic content that exceeds Google's 25mb limit--developers may upload paid and free content to Urban Airship's servers, which will transmit the content to the end user as necessary. In addition, In-App Purchase validates all purchase receipts before delivering content to the application and tracks updates to purchasable content, notifying users when updates are available.
Urban Airship introduced an in-app purchase solution optimized for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) rival iOS platform about 18 months ago, authenticating over 2.8 million in-app transactions in the period since. In-app purchases across free and premium apps on now account for 49 percent of iPhone developer revenues and 29 percent of iPad developer income, app store analytics firm Distimo reported in January 2011. In addition, Urban Airship has delivered more than 2.6 billion push notifications across iOS, Android and BlackBerry devices, translating to over 15 million push notifications per day.
