BlackBerry 8830 tops Handango Yardstick for Q3

Smartphone content provider Handango released the 2007 Third Quarter edition of its Handango Yardstick report, citing Research in Motion's BlackBerry 8830 as the device driving the most software revenue and units sold, ahead of Q2 leaders the BlackBerry Pearl and the Motorola Q. According to Handango, sales of the BlackBerry 8830 and other GPS-enabled devices like the BlackBerry Curve and the Nokia N95 were strong throughout the quarter, noting that both device manufacturers and customers appear increasingly interested in integrating GPS functionality into their smartphones.

Handango added 3,261 new titles to its content library during the quarter, up from 2,159 in Q3 of 2006--however, the ranks of new content partners declined year-over-year from 236 to 149, meaning a smaller pool of developers are contributing a larger proportion of new applications. The countdown of top-selling content categories has also changed significantly in the last 12 months--Entertainment now ranks second behind Business & Productivity, up from the seventh spot a year ago and ahead of Communications, Databases, Document Management, eBooks and Education.

For more on the Handango Yardstick:
-read this release

Motorola Q, BlackBerry Pearl top Handango Yardstick

In the second quarter edition of its Handango Yardstick report, smartphone content provider Handango reports that for the second consecutive quarter, the Motorola Q and BlackBerry Pearl ranked first and second in terms of revenue generated and applications sold via Handango storefronts. Two new devices--the Nokia N95 and the BlackBerry 8800--entered the list for the first time, squeezing out the older Palm Treo 650 and Cingular 8125. According to Handango, the number of new content titles added to its catalog rose 14 percent from the first quarter to 2732, an increase the company credits to the number of new devices entering the market supported by heavy consumer advertising.

Among the top apps, six titles from Spb Software House landed on the bestseller list, including Spb Mobile Shell, Spb Pocket Plus and Spb Phone Suite. MobiTV remained atop the list of applications for the Windows Mobile Smartphone platform, and Aces Texas Hold'Em was again Handango's best-selling game. While Business & Professional was the top-selling product category in terms of revenue, entertainment titles now closely trail business applications, accounting for 16 percent of total sales. Growing interest in GPS and LBS-related services pushed "maps" onto Handango's list of most commonly searched terms.
