Layoffs follow Palm revenue drop

Days after reporting fiscal second quarter revenues some $30 million lower than forecasted, embattled device maker Palm announced it would lay off more than 100 employees, roughly 10 percent of its global workforce. Citing shipping delays plaguing an unspecified product--reportedly a wider rollout of its Treo 755p device, finally issued by Verizon Wireless last week--Palm said it would post revenues between $345 to $350 million, well off October's $370 to $380 million estimate. "Palm is working to sharpen its focus and better align resources behind core initiatives that will make the greatest impact to our business," the company said in a statement. "To this end, and to ensure that our expenses are in line with projected revenues, we have made some reassignments and reductions in staff. This will better enable us to compete most effectively and ensure our long-term success."

The HTC Shift is more UMPC than anything else, though HTC was careful not to call it a "UMPC" specifically. The mini-laptop has a QWERTY keyboard, a 7-inch screen and a 30gb hard drive. The Shift runs Windows Vista and, of course, features WiFi connectivity in addition to tri-band UMTS/HSDPA and quad-band GSM/EDGE. Pricing is not yet available, but the device is expected to hit shelves in the U.S. and Europe in Q3. I suggest using a BlueTooth headset rather than trying to hold this thing to your ear.

The Asus Aura, a concept phone designed by Hungarian firm EGY Studio, features a 3.9" touchscreen, UMTS/HSDPA/WiFi connectivity and a slide-out keyboard in a slim package. It looks great and the specs put the iPhone to shame; too bad it only exists on paper.

Palm to announce new Treo next month

Palm has confirmed that it will announce a new Treo in the U.K. on September 12. Details are sketchy, but rumors suggest the new device will be the Treo 750 shown in this blurry picture. The phone is expected to be announced for Vodafone and, eventually, for Cingular in the U.S. The GSM phone is rumored to include a 1.3-megapixel camera and support UMTS, HSPDA and possibly even Wi-Fi. It's been almost exactly one year since Palm announced its first Windows-powered Treo.

BenQ shows off new slider phone

BenQ-Siemens has debuted a new UMTS slider phone. The SL91 is has a 3.2-megapixel camera that can record video along with a second VGA camera for those oh-so-common video calls. The Nokia 6282 is a UMTS smartphone destined for the Americas. The slider phone has a 2.2-inch QVGA screen, a 1-MP camera, FM radio and miniSD slot. The tiny phone runs the Series 40, Third Edition and weighs just over four ounces. Pricing is not yet available. Blog

MSMobiles has photos and specs for two upcoming HTC devices: Star Trek, a smartphone, and Hermes, a Pocket PC phone. The Star Trek is an EDGE clamshell roughly the size of the RAZR and will reportedly ship in March 2006.
