Layoffs follow Palm revenue drop

Days after reporting fiscal second quarter revenues some $30 million lower than forecasted, embattled device maker Palm announced it would lay off more than 100 employees, roughly 10 percent of its global workforce. Citing shipping delays plaguing an unspecified product--reportedly a wider rollout of its Treo 755p device, finally issued by Verizon Wireless last week--Palm said it would post revenues between $345 to $350 million, well off October's $370 to $380 million estimate. "Palm is working to sharpen its focus and better align resources behind core initiatives that will make the greatest impact to our business," the company said in a statement. "To this end, and to ensure that our expenses are in line with projected revenues, we have made some reassignments and reductions in staff. This will better enable us to compete most effectively and ensure our long-term success."

Palm gets small with Centro smartphone

Palm and Sprint introduced the Centro smart device, the first new Treo design issued in the U.S. market in several years and the smallest Palm smartphone to date. Featuring voice, text, IM, e-mail, web, contact and calendar capabilities as well as a full-color touch screen and full keyboard, the Centro weighs in at 4.3 by 2.1 by 0.75 inches and 4.2 ounces, with a 2.2-inch, 320-by-320 color screen. The Centro runs on Palm's four-year-old Garnet OS, and though it's optimized for Sprint's EV-DO Rev 0 network, the operator says it will not be upgradeable to the faster Rev A platform. Other highlights: The Blazer 4.5 Web browser, Palm's VersaMail e-mail application, Sprint's own e-mail application for access to Gmail, AOL, and Yahoo! accounts, a blogging app and access to Sprint's television and music services. The Palm Centro will arrive at retail in mid-October with a $99.99 price tag.

Sprint previews Palm OS-based Centro

At a Tech Summit in Reston, Virginia last week, Sprint offered sneak previews of the new mobile devices it will introduce to subscribers, among them the Centro, reportedly the smallest Palm OS-based smartphone yet released. The Centro--which earlier rumors and leaks variously attributed as the Treo Centro, the Treo 800, and Gandolf--will boast the Treo's signature touch screen and QWERTY thumb-keyboard, and supports Sprint's EV-DO data network; the carrier said the device is targeted at a younger consumer demographic, particularly subscribers new to the smartphone space. Other specifications, bells and whistles are presently unknown--reports suggest Sprint will launch the Centro at a retail price of $99, with a three-month exclusive on U.S. sales.

The tech summit also afforded Sprint the opportunity to unveil a CDMA/EV-DO version of the HTC Touch, a Windows Mobile 6.0-based smartphone and a CDMA version of the BlackBerry Pearl, all scheduled for launch later this year.

RIM announced it will release a version of its BlackBerry Application Suite for Windows Mobile 6 devices. The suite fully emulates the BlackBerry OS, meaning all third-party apps will be supported in addition to RIM's email and calendering tools. This potentially offers a new solution for mobile enterprise developers and IT departments struggling to support RIM devices and Windows Mobile. RIM's new media player will not be supported initially, but will likely come in a later release.

The thought of a Treo running BlackBerry on top of Windows Mobile would have seemed ridiculous a few years ago. I think decoupling the software from the hardware is a good thing; consumers get to mix and match and vendors can focus on their strengths. Of course, fans of the BlackBerry hardware argue RIM should create Windows Mobile devices instead.

Palm and Cingular has announced the release of the Treo 750, the first Treo that can access Cingular's 3G/UMTS network. At $400 (with two-year commitment and mail-in rebate), the Treo 750 is priced on par with other PPC devices like the Cingular 8525. Although new to U.S. consumers, the Treo 750 has been available in Europe as the Treo 750v since September.
