Android Market approaching 3 million download mark

Tools

Closing in on two weeks since Google launched its Android Market virtual storefront, mobile ad firm Medialets reports that as of Oct. 29, 167 mobile applications have been downloaded somewhere between 667,000 and 2.9 million times, with 41 apps accounting for 73 percent to 83 percent of all downloads. Two applications--Namco's Pac-Man and The Weather Channel--yielded the most total downloads, both coming in between the 50,000 and 250,000 benchmarks.

Medialets reports the number of Android applications has nearly tripled since the store opened, with five categories--Tools, Games, Lifestyle, Multimedia and Productivity--representing 61 percent of all available apps. Tools, Games and Productivity together account for slightly more than 50 of the 105 apps added since Android Market launched. Based on the available metrics, VentureBeat estimates Android downloads may reach 58 million after 100 days--by comparison, Apple's App Store reached 100 million downloads in just 60 days.
