Palm to launch Pre in mid-May?

Sprint is reportedly planning to launch Palm's much-anticipated Pre--the first smartphone based on the device maker's new webOS--in mid-May. Citing internal memos circulating inside Sprint retail stores, PhoneNews.com reports the operator has instituted a vacation freeze for all front-end employees stretching the entire month of May, and has already begun employee training in preparation for one of two launch windows. The first scenario would see Sprint receiving shipments of Pre devices at the end of April, with a retail introduction planned for May 17, while the second scenario would push the retail drop to June 29 if initial shipment volumes are deemed insufficient to initiate sales in May. Sprint employees add that the carrier does not typically mandate vacation freezes in May, suggesting the earlier launch is the more likely.
